Per ardua ad astra
The history of Corsican vineyards, from the end of the Middle Ages to the 19th century, was marked by the tribulations of the times. If it had not been in the Corsican character to resist adversity, these trials could have damaged or even destroyed the wealth represented by the diversity of indigenous and island grape varieties.
Thus, in the 1980s, young Corsican winegrowers became aware of this situation and decided, with the help of supportive winegrowers, including the Abatucci estate, to take steps to preserve Corsican grape varieties. This marked a turning point and an awareness of the richness of the island's terroir.
What is the situation today?
Today, the wine industry on the island of Corsica comprises:
- 295 producers
- 9 PDOs
- 1 PGI
- 5,955 hectares of vineyards
- 407,423 hectoliters of wine
- 20% exports
These figures alone speak louder than words and are a testament to the resilience of Corsican vineyards and the people who contribute to their reputation.
